Every now and then, one or two posts get reblogged around tumblr and mlscience gets a few new followers.

We’re very much inactive right now, but I sure do miss working on mlscience!

Have fun reading our old posts, new followers!

Q:

Hi! I’m so sorry to bother but I was wondering if you had an educated guess on how tall Luka is? If it’s not to much trouble; thank you very much! (also your blog is super cool!!!)

Anonymous

Hi, Admin AT here. As of right now, mlscience is inactive and defunct for the past few years. We haven’t had the time to come together and find and create new content.

I am considering redoing the height analysis projects in the future (if my time allows; Engineering University is not very good for my free time).

With that being said, please be reminded that the heights listed in our popular posts are not canon and are only very loosely based on the show’s model of the Mona Lisa (which may not be made at a 1:1 scale), and are not entirely correct. We are unaware of any character’s canon heights; however, once these are made available (if ever) then we many be able to use those as a baseline for everyone else’s heights.

For now though, consider those past measurements as flawed and mlscience as effectively down [unless someone else would like to help me run it? ;)].

-Admin AT

[P.S. As I was writing this post (and after watching Puppeteer 2), I realized that the Grévin Museum in Paris has realistic wax models of Ladybug and Chat Noir. Perhaps those could be used as a reference, hmm?]

HOW STRONG IS THE MIME?

MLSCIENCE IS BACK, WITH MORE CALCULATIONS AND LOTS MORE EIFFEL TOWERS.

This post has been in the works for around half a year now, with the first concept being produced way back when the episode “The Mime” first aired in South Korea. Since then, hiatuses and personal stuff prevented mlscience staff and contributors from focusing solely on this project (and a couple others), but it’s finally here.

Today we focus on the important question: How strong is the Mime?

image

To do this, we calculated approximately how much of the Eiffel Tower he cut off, and therefore how much of the Eiffel Tower he carried in those few seconds of the most epic scene in the first season of Miraculous Ladybug.

And to do that, we needed some statistics of the weights of each part of the Eiffel tower. It was a long search, but eventually, we found the best possible reference: this online copy of “La tour de trois cents mètres”, written by Gustave Eiffel himself, published in the year 1900, and filled with technical and scientific observations about the tower and the external forces that affected its design and engineering.

And then we had to recreate the slice of the Eiffel tower and calculate how much of each part remained on the tower, and how much was sliced off. For that, we created this spreadsheet (please click it), and our calculations can be summed up from there and this image:

image

As you can see, given the difficulty of calculating based on every single piece of the Eiffel tower (we were gonna do that but we couldn’t find a source for the weights of every single piece), we simply made educated guesses based on what’s visible, counting the pixels of the areas that remained and those that were sliced off, and moving along from there. (Do note that while there are differences between the ML universe Eiffel Tower and our actual Eiffel Tower, we used the dimensions and specifications of the real Eiffel Tower, for the sake of simplicity.)

Now, these are extremely rough estimates (so give or take up to 250,000kg), and they’re nowhere near exact, but these numbers give us an idea of how much the Mime can carry with his akuma powers:

The part of the Eiffel Tower that remained after the slice weighed around 4,838,619 - 5,011,352 kg (10,667,329 - 11,048,140 lbs).

The part of the Eiffel Tower that was sliced off (and, therefore, held up by the Mime) weighed around 4,688,138 - 4,860,871 kg (10,335,575 - 10,716,387 lbs!).

The angle of the slice relative to the ground is about 38 degrees.

That means the Mime carried close to 5,000 Tonnes of Eiffel Tower. STRONG.

Now, the reason that these numbers are so wide in range is because Eiffel himself put two different tables in his book (he claims within the book that it “wouldn’t make a difference” because it was only due to the inconsistencies brought by the revolutionary elevators), and so we had to calculate using both sets of information. In fact, the second set of info was off by 400 kg, and we had to provide yet another set of information. (All of which are seen in the spreadsheet.) Surprisingly, the part that was cut-off and the part that remained both were really close to each other in terms of mass; almost equally splitting the Eiffel Tower’s almost 10,000 tonnes to two parts of around 5,000 tonnes each.

So there’s our answer. The Mime can carry at least 5,000 tonnes, or around 5,000,000 kg, or roughly 11,000,000 lbs. That’s pretty strong.

And once again, the Eiffel Tower has helped @mlscience produce answers to these all-important questions. We love you, Eiffel tower.

To finish off this post, here’s actual footage of mlscience staff celebrating the irreplaceable landmark that towers over the city that we all know and love.

Special thanks to:

@wikkedwolff for helping translate some parts of the book from French; and @slibinass for being the goddess of productivity that pushed us to make this happen.

We here at mlscience will be back with more content soon!

ANNOUNCEMENT

@mlscience has teamed up with @ladynoir-aka-life to bring significant improvements to the Miraculers Plotting Project!

In her post here, she outlines the instructions on how to place yourself on a world map, to create a complete map of the Miraculous Ladybug Fandom (here)! Even Hawkdaddy’s in it.

In an effort to extract more accurate data, the Miraculers Plotting Project will now input geolocation data from the Miraculous Ladybug Fandom Map to create a more accurate study!

In line, these changes will occur:

  • The MPP will no longer create a full map plotting all Miraculers; the Fandom Map takes care of that quite well.
  • Instead, the MPP will create new maps that will represent the data gathered more meaningfully, including a map of the metropolitan cities with the most Miraculers, US states by Miraculer Population/Density, Miraculers per country, etc.
  • The MPP may be released later than expected, on late May or early June 2016. The MPP’s results are delayed indefinitely until further notice.

Of course, the MPP gathers more data than just geolocation, including age and gender, so if you haven’t yet, go answer it here! And if you haven’t placed yourself on the fandom map yet, do so by following the instructions on this post!

We hope that the fandom will enjoy the information that will eventually be released!

Also, watch out for Ships Ahoy #3! It’s gonna be our biggest yet.

Q:"Adrienette" apparently shouldn't have an e according to your triangle chart... But your "pie" chart says it should have an e... Which one is it?

yinwa333

(The post in question.)

(Correction: The triangle chart shows that it should have an ‘e’, and the swatch chart from the previous survey shows that it shouldn’t.)

The “pie” (swatch) chart was a representation of the responses from the previous ‘Ships Ahoy!’ survey. If you would look closely, it’s the same chart.

During those times, ‘Adrinette’ was only very slightly preferred over ‘Adrienette’, making no clear conclusion on which version is “correct”.

This time, however, ‘Adrienette’ is preferred by more people. While there is no actual solid rule on whether it should be spelled that way or not, the more recent data suggests that more people accept ‘Adrienette’ than ‘Adrinette’, which still has many supporters, and is about equally accepted.

As a rule, more recent data is more accurate than old data, so the conclusion that “Yes, ‘Adrienette’ has an E” is drawn from the fact that more people spelled it with an E. ‘Adrinette’, with its large number of supporters, is still acceptable.

You can spell it however you want, but more people spelled it “Adrienette” when the survey was conducted in February.

Ships Ahoy! #2:[FEBRUARY LADYNOIR] Results!

(Infographics made with Piktochart.)

This is a bit late, but the second ‘Ships Ahoy!’ survey results are here! This survey can be seen as a ‘sequel’ to ‘Ships Ahoy #1: [LADYNOIR]’.

All results were collected between the 1st and 26th of the month of love, February 2016! A lot has happened since then, so while these results may not reflect current opinions, they are accurate to that time period.

If you didn’t get to answer this survey, check out @mlscience and our research page!

This same survey will be reconducted in about a month, so we could provide a picture on how the fandom’s preferences and opinions change over time.

We also launched the BOX OF FREEDOM with this survey! Click “Keep Reading” to view some of the responses that caught our eyes.

Q:I've been taking part of both the first and the current Ships Ohoy, and I think it's a fun and interesting project^^ I was just wondering one thing; how often do you do a Ships Ohoy and how long does it last? Just curious^^

Anonymous

The ‘Ships Ahoy!’ surveys currently have no set schedules; however, we do try to send them out around a month apart, and the previous two lasted about a month as well. They are intended to be kind of a way to measure the state of the ships within the fandom, so they will be sent out every now and then.

MLScience Fandom Research: Ships Ahoy! #2: [February LadyNoir]

MLSFR’s second Ships Ahoy survey is now accepting responses! Think of it as a sequel to the previous one. This survey is updated and contains different questions, focusing more on the preferred ship combinations than their naming conventions.

You can participate in this survey by clicking here. Shipper or non-shipper, we need your opinions. Reblog this post to share it with fellow Miraculers!

This survey is a project by MLScience Fandom Research.

Like the last one, full infographics and conclusion will be released. The survey will only be accepting responses for a few weeks, so answer while you can. After answering, click here to view the Google Analytics of the responses so far. Check out the previous survey’s results over here!

The Sphenoid bone is part of the human neurocranium, a collection of bones in the skull that forms a protective case for the brain. It is located behind the eyes.

Perhaps the most striking thing about this bone is how it resembles a pair of bat or butterfly wings, like this:

It kinda matches the shape of the communication mask thing Hawkmoth uses as well:

MLSCIENCE NOW HAS MORE THAN 1,000 FOLLOWERS!

image

We, the @mlscience staff, would like to thank all of you! It’s only been 27 posts and less than 3 months since this blog has been made, but we’ve already gained so many supporters!

We haven’t made any big releases recently because most of the core mlscience staff has been busy with other stuff lately, but rest assured we’re still doing calculations and analyses when we find the time!

Currently, we’re still calculating the weight of parts of the Eiffel Tower and looking for the species of…some stuff. (No spoiler :-) There’s a bit more stuff to do in the waiting list, waiting to be scienced…

Miraculous Trivia posts are getting retouched. We’re going to release something else this weekend related to this matter… (eee!)

The English and French versions of the MPP are now live! We also have a Korean version up (thanks to @wikkedwolff and @peachbunni for translating into those languages!). Feel free to copy-paste those links into Twitter and Facebook and sharing the survey to other Miraculers! We’re gonna close the acceptation of responses in late March.

Mlscience is still receiving asks! Hit us up with a suggestion, observation, or post recommendation if you want to see us do some mad science on those things in the future. >:)

Once again, thanks for following mlscience! We hope you’ll continue to appreciate the content we give.

Le Projet de Traçage des Miraculers

(ENG: Miraculers Plotting Project; KOR:

Ships Ahoy! #1:[LADYNOIR] Results!

The first full infographic out of MLSFR and ‘Ships Ahoy!’ is here! All data that was used came from a Google Forms Survey conducted between November 27, 2015, and January 7, 2016. A total 550 people answered the survey. If you didn’t get to participate in this survey, don’t worry! @mlscience has many more to come in the near future. Check out our research page!

We now know what the fandom calls the combinations of ships, including how to pronounce “Ladrien”, how the ‘N’ in “LadyNoir” doesn’t matter whether it’s upper- or lower- case, and how only nine people support “Marinara” for the very saucy ship.

We also noted the popularity of Marichat, which was possibly caused by the popularity of fanfiction such as @taylordraws ‘s Heartstrings, which has earned over 4,634 Kudos and over 82,058 hits on Ao3, and 741 Favs on Fanfiction.net.

We also conclude that everyone ships LadyNoir, bar a couple of outliers.

This same survey will be reconducted in a few months, so we could provide a picture on how the fandom’s preferences and opinions change over time.

Q:This is really cool, actually! I'm loving what I'm seeing so far and it's really helpful to have actual reasons (and calculations!) as to why you think these things rather than just slapping them up and calling them good. My question is would you like credits for the data in my fanfiction should I use it? (needed info on the yoyo and that's how I found you in the first place. XD)

amynchan

Credits are unnecessary but are appreciated! Everyone in mlscience does their best to provide facts and calculations as accurate as they can. We love to see others appreciating out efforts :)

-Admin AT

Sidenote: The yo-yo calculation is pretty outdated… maybe we should redo it with the Mime episode, hmm… >:?

The Eiffel tower is Paris’s most recognizable landmark, and is of key importance to @mlscience. So far, the Eiffel tower has been used in three separate calculations as a reference (one of which hasn’t been posted yet!). Really, we wouldn’t know what to do without it.

image

Melting the entire puddle iron structure of the Eiffel Tower (which means this excludes the stone foundations, paint, etc.) and compessing it into a big ball would give you this.

The sphere would have a volume of ~935,000 Liters and would weigh ~7,300,000 Kilograms.

Some more calculations regarding the Chemistry and Physics of the composition of the Eiffel Tower can be found here: http://www.thechalkface.net/resources/melting_the_eiffel_tower.pdf

It’s still pretty big.
