HOW TALL IS CHAT NOIR?

As a science and mathematics blog, @mlscience needs a lot of data to calculate stuff. One such piece of data would be dimensions; length, height, width, etc. These dimensions are crucial in order to calculate how fast things go, how heavy things are, and how much volume everything has.

We needed to find someone’s height, so we set our eyes on one of the easiest candidates: Chat Noir. We also needed something that we can compare him to in real life, and that thing turned out to be Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa.

TL;DR: Chat Noir is about ~180cm (5′11″) tall, assuming that Copycat and Chat Noir are exactly identical in height and that the Mona Lisa portrayed in the show has the same dimensions as the real life Mona Lisa.

(Special thanks to @madelinelime for providing us with HD screenshots, and to @mylittlehony for pointing out an error in the cm to feet conversions!)

(Click “Keep Reading” to view our methods. Click here for Part 2.)

The actual prompt for this task was to find out how fast Hawkmoth’s butterflies fly to calculate how long it would take for them to fly to major cities around the world. How does that relate to this post, you ask? You’ll find out someday.

Anyway, we started by thinking of things that exist in real life that we can compare the characters to and estimate their heights. We tried using the Eiffel Tower and Adrien Agreste’s Mercedes-Benz S550 sedan, but there were some problems with perspective and they were too unreliable.

So instead, we opted with the Mona Lisa, a real life thing that exists, has dimensions, and Copycat is in very close proximity with in the episode “L’Imposteur”. First, we had to measure how large the frame that houses the Mona Lisa was by using the Distance formula to calculate approximately how many pixels long they are, and using the basic rules of proportion, turn the value in pixels to centimeters:

(3773/37 is about 102 cm.)

Next, we had to measure how tall Copycat is in relation to Mona Lisa’s frame, and using the same formula as before, find his height in centimeters:

So there’s our final answer: Copycat (and therefore Chat Noir) is about ~179.57cm tall, which we can round up to ~180cm. (Admin AT made a few more different calculations on a couple of other areas on the frame, but the general final answer always falls around ~180cm.) Do note that this is based on whether or not the Mona Lisa shown in the show has the same dimensions as the real life Mona Lisa, and that this should be taken as an estimate instead of a definite answer, but it accurate nonetheless, at least in the episode “L’Imposteur.”

Now since you read and made it all the way here, we should give you a little something more:

Ladybug is about ~165cm tall (5′5″), and Ladybug and Chat Noir’s height difference is around ~15cm.

Do what you want with this information.

(Fic writers and artists may rejoice now.)

EDIT: There were some errors in an earlier version of this post. Chat Noir is 5.9 feet tall and Ladybug is 5.4 feet tall, which translate to 5′11″ and 5′5″, respectively. Thanks to @mylittlehony for pointing it out!

Adrien is such a tall child…

EDIT: PART 2 HAS BEEN POSTED! This is now a dedicated series of posts to narrow down Adrien/Chat Noir’s height. Stay tuned for more.
