”Anonymous asked:

How long do you think Ladybug’s yo-yo is?”

The answer is simple and can be found in this tweet by Hawkdaddy:

image

“[Length] of string is controlled by willpower.” “probably infinite”.

But since we can, we calculated the length of the Yoyo String from this particular scene from “Le Bulleur” anyway:

image

TL;DR: It’s around ~142 meters long in that scene. Rough approximations and all.

(Click “Keep Reading” for all the calculations.)

First, we had to figure out where the swing was anchored. It’s not obvious in the episode, so we had to use math to do it. Anyway we started by separating a version of that gif into 38 different frames and merged most of them together in photoshop, like this: (Mod Cres did most of the work after Admin AT gave up trying to do so on pixlr.com.)

image

(^Groovy.)

Next, we plotted where Ladybug’s right hand was in each frame.

image

After that, we needed to draw a circle across the general arc of those points to find out where Chat’s baton (or, if you follow Nickelodeon logic, Cat’s Stick) was anchored. It was a bit complicated and we produced two different but very similar results:

image
image

We concluded that the baton was anchored slightly above the second floor of the Eiffel Tower.

After that, we had to know how far Ladybug and Chat Noir was from the center. To find that, Admin AT got his scale model of the Eiffel tower and produced tiny 2mm scale models of Ladybug and Chat Noir, to try and imitate the scene:

image

(Uh. yeah. It was somewhat like that.)

In the process, we estimated Ladybug and Chat Noir’s location to be somewhere close to the ground like this: (and plotted the estimated length of the string to compare it to the Eiffel Tower.)

image

Then we calculated how far it was in meters using basic proportion on Mathway.com:

So we ended up with the conclusion that Ladybug’s Yoyo String was around ~142 meters long during that one scene from “Le Bulleur”. Rough approximations and all.

We spent more than a day on this. Wow.
