(The post concerned.)

A lot of people have asked about this, so we’re not gonna ignore it. However, even if Marinette’s parents have different eye colors from what we mentioned, it’s not going to affect the eye color of Marinette’s children because they will still both have the blue gene because Marinette already has the double recessive blue. But since I’m feeling good today, I made some Punnett squares to illustrate some possible genotypes for Marinette’s parents while still being capable of producing blue-eyed children.

Anyway, genetics is weird and complicated. It takes a lot of individual genes to determine how much pigment is produced by the body to make our eyes a certain color. To make things simpler, we followed Mendel’s methods of looking at the visible physical traits and creating assumptions from parent and offspring phenotypes. It’s very difficult to trace which exact genes are present in these characters that affect their eye color.

If Tom had Green eyes and Sabine had Brown/Black eyes:

If Tom had Brown/Black eyes and Sabine had Gray eyes:

(Note: since gray eyes are very similar genetically to blue eyes, we assumed that it depended on the same gene and used “bb”. In reality, blue and gray eyes are very similar yet produce different amounts of pigment.)

If Tom had Green eyes and Sabine had Gray eyes:

Any combination of genes where either parent doesn’t have the recessive blue gene would be impossible because Marinette needs a recessive blue gene from each parent to have blue eyes.
